#1 The Irishman | Odds: +225

Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Irishman stars Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. This film revolves around the life of the World War II veteran-turned-hitman Frank Sheeran, referred to as the Irishman. This movie was based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt.

The production budget of the movie was $159,000,000, making it one of the most expensive films ever directed and co-produced by Scorsese. On a brighter note, The Irishman has been highly acclaimed by critics, getting nods in terms of the direction, screenplay, and the cast’s performances, among others.

#2 Marriage Story | Odds: +440

Director Noah Baumbach received praises after his movie Marriage Story had its world premiere in August 2019 at the Venice Film Festival and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Rotten Tomatoes, a popular online movie review website, recorded that the Baumbach movie’s average rating based on the site’s critics was 9.23/10. The portal’s consensus review read:

“Observing a splintering union with compassion and expansive grace, the powerfully acted Marriage Story ranks among writer-director Noah Baumbach’s best works.”

As suggested by the title, Marriage Story is about a married couple, only much concentration was put on how they went about their coast-to-coast divorce. It casts Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver who played the roles of the married actress and stage director, respectively.

#3 Once Upon a Time in Hollywood | Odds: +500

The Hollywood Reporter described Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as Quentin Tarantino’s “love letter to ’60s LA.” Critically acclaimed for its cast and direction, the movie grossed $369,000,000 worldwide after it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2019 and screened in US theaters in July and in UK theaters in August of the same year.

Among the top five predicted to win as Best Picture, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood features the largest ensemble cast. This Tarantino film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Emilie Hirsch, and Timothy Olyphant, among others. It is about how a movie actor went with the changes in the Holywood film industry, highlighting “multiple storylines in a modern fairy tale tribute to the final moments of Hollywood’s golden age.”

#3 Joker | Odds: +500

Psychological thriller Joker just broke Deadpool’s record of being the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. With over $853,000,000 worth of sales and still counting, the film is currently the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2019. It was directed by Todd Phillips based on DC Comics’ stories about Arthur Fleck, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, who later named himself the Joker.

Phoenix received much praise for his performance as the mentally ill Fleck. But some critics called out the movie for its dark theme highlighting the societal dangers of one’s mental illness and the use of violence as a response to socio-political issues.

#4 Jojo Rabbit | Odds: +600

Adapted from the book Caging Skies by Christine Leunens, Jojo Rabbit is a satirical comedy film about the title character, played by Roman Griffin Davis, who is a 10-year-old boy living in Nazi Germany during World War II. He is described as a patriotic member of the Hitler Youth. He then gets confronted by a dilemma after finding out his mother, played by Scarlett Johansson, is secretly sheltering a Jewish girl in their attic.

This movie directed by Taika Waititi premiered at the 44th Toronto Internation Film Festival in September 2019 and was released in the US and New Zealand in October. The critics generally praised the performances of the main cast, but were polarized in terms of how comedically portrayed the Nazis were in Jojo Rabbit.

#5 Waves | Odds: +700

Waves is a drama film that had its world premiere in August 2019 at the Telluride Film Festival. Its main cast includes Kelvin Harrison, Jr., Taylor Russell, Alexa Demie, Lucas Hedges, and Sterling K. Brown. It was directed and written by Trey Edward Shults and is set to be released on November 15, 2019.

This Americal movie explores the rippling effects of one’s bad life decision. Tyler, the main character portrayed by Harrison, is introduced as a successful athlete. Later on, he gets inflicted with a shoulder injury, impregnates her girlfriend Alexis, and eventually becomes more immersed in an emotional quagmire only to make more wrong decisions.

Rotten Tomatoes wrote:

“An up-close look at one family’s emotional ups and downs, Waves captures complicated dynamics with tenderness and grace.”

The films that succeed the list of titles with the highest odds of winning best picture include A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Just Mercy, 1917, Knives Out, Ford v Ferrari, and the Lighthouse. The 92nd Academy Awards ceremony will be on February 9, 2020, to be presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
