Ballon d’Or 2017 Award: Who Will Take the Trophy this Year?

October 13, 2017

The Ballon d’Or Award is essentially the European Player of the Year Award. Players who receive this award are chosen as the best players in the region.

Certain sportsbook are offering a special betting market for the winner of the Ballon d’Or 2017 award. They are leaning toward Cristiano Ronaldo to take home the coveted golden ball.

Ballon d’Or nominees for 2017

The nominees for this year are shortlisted to only 30 players. Only about half of the people who were shortlisted in 2016 appeared on the list. A quarter of the people in the list are Real Madrid players. This includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcelo, Karim Benzema, Isco, Ramos, and Luka Modric.

Some sportsbooks heavily favor Ronaldo to receive the award this year. Skybet has Ronaldo at 1/33 odds to win the award. The only two close to him are Lionel Messi with 12 and Neymar with 33 odds.

Certain Bitcoin sportsbook sites may also have a similar market for the winner of the Ballon d’Or award. This includes Bet365 that offered a betting market for Messi to take home the award or not.

Early Ballon d’Or Awardees

The very first Ballon d’Or Award was the late Sir Stanley Matthews. He is the only player to have been knighted and continued to play football until he turned 50. Stanley won the award in 1956 while playing with Blackpool.

While the first awardee was a knight, the second one became an honorary president of Real Madrid in 2000. Alfredo Stéfano Di Stéfano Laulhé is a football legend while playing for Real Madrid. He was a key player for helping the team win the La Liga and European Champions Cup in the 50s. Alfredo was given the Ballon d’Or in both 1957 and 1959.

The Ballon d’Or is not just given to the forward or outside players in a season. Lev Ivanovich Yashin breaks this concept early on by being the first and only goalkeeper to receive an award while playing for the Dynamo Moscow club. Yashin was more involved when guarding the net by meeting head first with oncoming attackers and going out of his line to intercept crosses. He blocked more than 150 penalty kicks and has more than 270 clean sheet games throughout his career.

Meanwhile, one of the best Ballon d’Or awardees is Zinedine Yazid Zidane. Zidane is a genius tactician who can find an effective method of attack for his team. He also has great ball control as he goes through the tiniest hole in his opponent’s defense. After retiring as a player, Zidane turns to a coaching career with Real Madrid where he is still the manager of the club. He continues to offer the team his exceptional playmaking ability.
