Dota 2 $100 Million Prize Money Puts Others to Shame

Date Posted: June 13, 2017

Valve sets itself as the highest contributor to the esports scene with its Dota 2 $100 million prize money in total.  This is more than double the total prize money that its direct competitor, League of Legends, is giving away.

Surprisingly, League of Legends has more players and has more tournaments than Dota 2. Despite this, Dota 2 is giving away more to its champions than what other sports have given to its winners.

Dota 2 prize money

When it comes to the biggest possible prize money in an esports event, Dota 2 always comes to mind among many professional and casual players. In the last three International tournaments, the Dota 2 prize money has reached more than $10 million. The last International saw a total prize of more than $20 million.

In comparison to its competitor, the 2014 and 2015 League of Legends World Championship tournament saw about $2 million. Last year, the World Championship gave at a total of $5 million. It is important to note that League of Legends held about 1,866 players and has 4,739 pro players while Dota 2 only held 741 tournaments and has 1,952 pro players. The $58.86 million difference between the total prizes the two games have given comes down to where the prize money comes from.

Crowd funding prize pool

Ever since 2013, Valve has been selling an in-game item called the International interactive compendium. About $2.50 or 25 percent of the prize of the compendium go toward the total prize pool of the International tournament. The compendium costs only $10.

The Dota 2 International Compendium or Battle Pass offered many in-game benefits. One of which are the set statistics of each team playing in the tournament. The compendiums also offer a set of cosmetic in-game items that a player can use for his hero.

In this year’s Dota 2 Battle Pass, a player will receive an incredible amount of rewards based on the Battle Levels he has in his compendium. These rewards include announcer packs, hero taunts, emoticons, music packs, crab couriers that change its shell when it increases its levels, and much more.

Higher Battle Levels will give one or more very valuable Immortal Treasure. These are in-game items that have its visual effect and sounds. Getting the highest possible Battle Level of 1,000 will give a player a commemorative Aegis of Champions.

With these in-game items and rewards, players and fans of esports team will be buying in an incredible volume of International Battle Pass. As of this writing, the total prize pool for the next International tournament is at $14,691,233.

Esports fans can also double down on a favorite team by making a wager on their win through many Bitcoin sportsbook platforms. Some examples of these are Bet365 and Nitrogen Sports.
