Top 10 GoT Characters Most Likely to Rule Westeros in Series Finale

Date Posted: November 15, 2018

On November 13, HBO announced the premiere of the final season of the fantasy drama series Game of Thrones (GoT). Without stating the exact date, HBO shared that Season 8 will begin in April 2019.

Together with the announcement was a promo video looking back on the highlights from the past seven seasons. The official Twitter account of Game of Thrones added a caption to the video which said:

“Every battle. Every betrayal. Every risk. Every fight. Every sacrifice. Every death. All #ForTheThrone.”

Being that GoT is now considered as a cult classic, its fans were sent into hysteria as the revelation on who will sit on the Iron Throne nears. Fans have their own guesses on who will get to finally rule Westeros after they have waited patiently for eight years.

Sportsbooks have also released their respective sets of predictions for the future king/queen. From Samwell Tarly to Daenerys Targaryen, Bovada and SkyBet listed down the odds of almost every living character in the series of ruling Westeros. As winter draws near, who are the characters that fans will most likely see seated on the Iron Throne?

10 | Cersei Lannister

Bovada: +2,500 | SkyBet: +2,500

Cersei’s struggles in Season 5 when she was forced to have the Walk of Atonement is a scene fans will never forget. Some may say that she deserved it for being an evil woman.

But GoT is known for its unpredictable plot twists. The good may not always prevail at the end, which is why Cersei lands a sure spot in the list of top 10 characters predicted to be on the Iron Throne.

9 | Samwell Tarly

Bovada: +2000 | SkyBet: +5,000

“Game of Thrones historians” on Reddit believe that Samwell Tarly has a chance to be the ruler of Westeros as a theory circulates that Sam may secretly be a Targaryen.

The theory goes back to how the Lannisters killed the children of Elia Martell and Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. It suggests that one of the children was smuggled and was given to Targaryen loyalists, the Tarlys. Sam does show Martell and Targaryen characteristics with his “great love for books and songs” and “gentle heart and sweet wit.”

Samwell Tarly

A supporting evidence for this theory is how even though Sam is the firstborn from House Tarly, he was still sent to the Night’s Watch just because he was an academic. The theory suggests that this was Randyll Tarly’s (Sam’s father) way to keep the Tarly lineage within the blood.

If Sam is proven to be a Targaryen, he will surpass Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen and be the true heir to the throne.

8 | Gendry

 Bovada: +1,600 | SkyBet: +1,600

Fans have barely seen Gendry throughout the seven seasons. He left Dragonstone in a rowboat in season three and was back in season seven for Jon Snow’s fighting force. It was also revealed in the early seasons that Gendry is the late King Robert Baratheon’s bastard.

Robert was Cersei’s husband and the latest legitimate ruler of the Seven Kingdoms before the fight for the Iron Throne happened. Will season eight be the time for Gendry to reclaim what is rightfully his?

7 | Sansa Stark

Bovada: +1,400 | SkyBet: +1,400

Fan-favorite Sansa Stark is also in line to be the next ruler of Westeros. Theories suggest that by the end of the series, Daenerys and Jon will both die, and Sansa will then take a seat at the Iron Throne.

This theory was based on how the GoT novel, A Song of Ice and Fire, was inspired by real events during the Wars of the Roses.  Between 1455 and 1485, Henry VII (Robert Baratheon) ruled England and then his son, the boy king, Edward VI (Joffrey and Tommen). He was then replaced by Bloody Mary or Mary Tudor (Cersei).

If George R. R. Martin really does follow the reigning chronology of the English, then a young redhead (Sansa) will take on the crown next as Elizabeth I was next in line.

Whether Sansa will rule the Seven Kingdoms or not, fans will truly miss her. A fan even tweeted a collection of Sansa’s photos throughout the series.

She said:

“I’m not ready to say goodbye to Sansa Stark forever.”

6 | Tyrion Lannister

Bovada: +1,200 | SkyBet: +1,200

Season 6 Episode 9 was centered not only on the bastardship of Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton, but also of Tyrion. There have been speculations that Tyrion is secretly Aerys Targaryen’s bastard, and this specific episode had heavily hinted that.

Some pieces of evidence that can prove Tyrion is Aerys II’ son include: Aerys and Joanna Lannister had a brief relationship, Tywin Lannister hated Tyrion, and Tyrion can tame Daenerys’ dragons which can be a sign for dragon’s blood within him.

There was also a scene in which Yara and Theon Greyjoy were paralleled to Daenerys and Tyrion as they made a pact. Daenerys then said, “Our fathers were evil men, all of us here.” She intended it to include Tyrion as well because Tywin was a cruel father. But it can also be foreshadowing that she and Tyrion are siblings as the scene suggests the parallelism of plots.

5 | Arya Stark

Bovada: +1,000 | SkyBet: +1,800

Arya Stark can be seated on the Iron Throne, but it can also be a Faceless Man. Theories suggest that the battle for the Seven Kingdoms is not just between houses, but also between deities.

shuttleguy11 on Reddit theorized:

“Obviously, this theory is not new, but it seems as though this is not a fight between the great houses, but a proxy war between the gods.”

Arya was trained by a Faceless Man named Jaqen to become one of them and to soon change appearances at will. The theory says that Jaqen is originally Syrio Forel, Arya’s past sword instructor, and is serving the God of Death.

shuttleguy11 added:

“The God of Death, The Lord of Light, The Old Gods, the New Gods, all have champions in Westeros. But the one playing behind the scenes where no one exists to counter their plans is the God of Death.”

To sum it up, the theory says that the Faceless Men will use Arya for the throne to serve the God of Death.

4 | The Night King

Bovada: +900 | SkyBet: +900

For fans who believe that GoT will end at a disappointing note, it is possible as the Night King’s Iron Throne rank is competitively at fourth place. Theories say that the Night King will get to sit on the Iron Throne, but of course not without a twist.

GoT author, George R.R. Martin, mentioned in an interview that the swords that make the Iron Throne are made by true Valyrian steel which is made of dragon fire, magic, and advanced steelwork.

A certain aonf of Reddit theorized:

“The Iron Throne is made out of regular swords, fused together with dragon fire. Dragon fire turns regular materials into things that can kill White Walkers. Therefore, if you disassembled the Iron Throne (symbolism alert!) you would have one thousand weapons capable of killing White Walkers.”

Taking this theory to another level, notgoneyet of Reddit added:

“I wonder if that’s the bittersweet ending that GRRM is talking about? The WW triumph and take over Westeros, then as the NK sits on the Iron Throne he shatters and Winter is over?”

In this theory, the Night King will sit on the Iron Throne, but not for long.

@GameOfThrones tweeted a photo of the Night King with the caption:

“If they get through, everyone dies #ForTheThrone”

3 | Daenerys Targaryen

Bovada: +600 | SkyBet: +600

An obvious favorite to rule Westeros is Daenerys Targaryen or Khaleesi, among her other names. Since season one, fans have witnessed Dany’s journey to prominence. She has conquered cities and nations, and she has freed men and women, not to mention that she went through a lot before gaining the position she has now.

Her advisor Missandei has even revealed to her that the prophecy says that the one who was promised to rule Westeros could be a prince or princess. But some fans are not locked in with the predictable choice of Dany ruling the Seven Kingdoms because of GoT’s history with plot twists. The series’ unexpected turns could be a reason Dany is not the top choice of bookmakers to rule Westeros.

2 | Jon Snow

Bovada: +500 | SkyBet: +500

Season seven dropped a really good bomb that boosted Jon Snow’s chances of sitting on the Iron Throne. It was revealed that Jon Snow is the son of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark – Aegon Targaryen.

Bran Stark said:

“He’s never been a bastard. He’s the heir to the Iron Throne.”

After the revelation, everything changed – Jon solidified himself as a true contender and a ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.

1 | Bran Stark

Bovada: +130 | SkyBet: -150

It is somewhat a surprise that Bran is on the top of the list since he never really did appear as an obvious contender in the series, not to mention his below-the-belt paralysis.

Theories suggest that Bran and the Night King are the same person. With Bran’s ability to warp time and be in people’s bodies in the past, it is possible that Bran moved into the Night King’s body and now could not get out – an event that Jojen Reed warned Bran about. If that is the case then Bran’s Iron Throne prediction and the Night King’s prediction are also one and the same.

Say the theories stating that the Iron Throne is made up of materials that can kill White Walkers, that Bran is the Night King, and that Bran will rule Westeros are true. Then Bran will most likely sit on the throne only to die. What a way to end the series.

Other characters up to be the ruler of Westeros are Jaime Lannister, Davos Seaworth, Euron Greyjoy, Varys, and Melisandre, among others. Fans will have to wait until next year to find out if any of these characters make it to the Iron Throne.
