Nadal and Svitolina Top French Open 2018 Sportsbook Odds
Date Posted: May 29, 2018
Rafael Nadal and Elina Svitolina are strong favorites to win the French Open 2018, according to bookmakers.
Nadal, regarded as the King of Clay with multiple French Open titles under his belt, will defend the clay throne against contender Zverev, as sportsbooks predict. Meanwhile, online bookies anticipate Svitolina’s championship after she impressed the sports community during here title defense in BNL d’Italia with 6-0, 6-4 against Simona Halep.
Zverev’s Chances Against Nadal’s Clay Performance
Nadal currently holds 10 French Open titles since 2005 and has lost only twice against Robin Soderling in 2009 and Novak Djokovic in 2015. His record total of wins on a clay court is 344 with 30 losses. Overall, that is a win percentage of 92 for clay courts.
The question of every Roland-Garros fan is not if Nadal will win it again this year. The real question is whether there is anyone capable of beating the king while he is in his element. Bet365 and William Hill set him with 1.36 odds to win.
According to sportsbooks, Alexander Zverev is one of the players who have a fair chance at taking down the King of Clay in Roland-Garros. William Hill gives Zverez 8.00 odds to win the Grand Slam while Bet365 has him at 8.50 odds.
While Zverev has never won a Grand Slam tournament before, the German player should not be taken lightly on the clay court. Zverev won the Italian Open 2017 against Novak Djokovic with 6-4, 6-4 and the Madrid Open this season against Dominic Thiem with 6-4, 6-4.
Zverev and Nadal fought in the Italian Open Finals last week. While Nadal won the Open, he was visibly pushed hard by Zverev during the match. Zverev, the second-seeded and No.3 ranking player, has a shot at the title if he can further improve his performance on clay and deliver more pressure to Nadal when the they play against each other.
With Nadal nearly entering his prime, he will soon pass his title to a player who can benefit from a clay surface. Time will tell whether Zverev will be the third person to beat the King at Roland Garros or if someone else has what it takes to outperform Nadal.
Svitolina Enters Roland-Garros as Two-Time Italian Open Champ
With a second Italian Open title under her belt, Svitolina is the favored female player to win Roland-Garros. Both Bet365 and William Hill set her with 6.50 odds to win.
The No. 4 seed player demonstrated her superior clay court performance in Rome last week against top seed Simona Halep. The Ukrainian player delivered high-level servings and managed to return nearly every one of Halep’s attacks. Although Halep managed to improve her form in the second set, she still lost because of unforced errors.
While Svitolina gets the best odds for the French Open, Halep is the close second-favored player for the tournament. Bet365 and William Hill put her at 7.00 odds to win.
Halep is consistent with her performance as evidenced by her ranking. She also managed to reach the finals of the French Open in 2014 against Maria Sharapova and in 2017 against Jeļena Ostapenko.
The women’s singles often lead to unpredictable and interesting results. But history may repeat itself with Halep and Svitolina reaching the finals of the French Open. Roland-Garros might also see the time when Serena Williams will make a major comeback to the tennis scene after she went down to No. 453 in the rankings.
Predictions as to which players will win Roland-Garros men’s and women’s singles differ. But sportsbooks seem to have already made online bettors lean toward placing their bets on Nadal and Svitolina. The odds are oftentimes right, but nobody knows who will claim the victory in June until the tournament concludes.
