Quake Champions Esports Tournament Offers $1M Prize
June 16, 2017
In the Bethesda E3 conference, the company announced its Quake Champions esports tournament on Aug. 26 for QuakeCon. To get everyone excited for the upcoming tournament, the prize pool will have a $1 million up for grabs.
Quake Champions is a multiplayer focused game which is similar to Quake Live and Quake III Arena. Bethesda is looking to set this as a staple esports game.
Michal Blicharz, VP of Pro Gaming at ESL, said:
“I think ESL and Bethesda have a great opportunity with Quake Champions because of how good a spectator sports Quake is. Quake has the potential to unite viewers of all game genres. ESL has Quake in its DNA and we are a perfect esports partner for id Software.”
Quake World Championships
The upcoming Quake World Championships is a partnership event between id Software, ESL, and Bethesda. These three companies are bringing Quake back to the spotlight of the esports scene.
The Quake World Championships will have two formats. One is the Duel match between two competitors and the other is the Sacrifice competition that has two groups of four people clashing against each other.
Tim Willits, Studio Director of id Software, said:
“Quake is back in the esports scene in a big way with Quake Champions, and the Quake World Championships will be the ultimate test of skill for the best competitive players in the world. Working with ESL, we’re excited to produce an incredible competition featuring amazing pro player talent, all vying for the million dollar prize pool and the title of the very first Quake World Championships champion.”
The qualifiers for the Quake World Championships will start in a few weeks. Almost everyone around the globe can qualify for a spot at the upcoming tournament at Quakecon. In August, there will be 24 Duel players and 8 Sacrifice groups who will travel to Texas for this year’s Quakecon.
Players in Americas and Australian regions will be playing for the NA qualifiers. Those who are in Russia and Asian regions will join the EU qualifiers. Anyone interested in a shot at the finals should register to join.
The game is still new so there is a few Bitcoin sportsbook platforms that has announced that it will cover the tournament. However, there is a good chance that sportsbooks which covered previous ESL games and offered esports Bitcoin betting might offer odds for the upcoming tournament. These include Cloudbet and William Hill.
Bethesda is adding a new gameplay mechanic to the Quake formula with its introductions of Champions. Each Champion has his/her own stats and unique abilities. NYX, for example, can Ghost Walk where she becomes immune to damage while her skill is active. Quake Champions is also bringing in BJ Blazkowicz from Bethesda’s Wolfenstein franchise. This champion can dual-wield or use two weapons at the same time.
